During his time with the band, Cook Craig has only had a handful of tracks to his name, yet when he does get the chance, you can be sure it will be distinct and memorable. “The Garden Goblin” is a prime example. The song is a short, whimsical track comparable to early Syd Barrett, and features a drum machine, sound effects, and unique synth parts throughout. The song ends with a short, discordant jam before leading into “Blame It On the Weather.” This happy-go-lucky tune has a pretty loyal following with lots of fan art and an attempted flash mob at Red Rocks in 2022. While the song is one of the shortest on the album, it sure has left an impact.

Despite the fantasy imagery that may come to mind with the song’s title, “The Garden Goblin” is referencing Cook’s french bulldog Homer. In an interview featured in Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie Magazine issue five, Cook explained the song’s origins. “Recently I wrote a song for Gizz called ‘Garden Goblin’. It's about gardening. It’s about Homer in the garden, he looks like a bit of a goblin! He loves being out there. When he was growing up and was a puppy we lived in share houses and apartments, so we never really had a backyard. He loves when I go out there to garden, he follows me around.” Pipe-eye fans might recognize Homer from the cover of Inside/Outside and as the potential inspiration for “Best Friend.” While we don’t know much about the song’s recording history, at 10:35 of the behind-the-scenes video The Making of Omnium Gatherum Cavs is seen playing a drum part very close to the electronic beat on the finished song, implying that the song may have been recorded with a real kit at one point but was changed. The final studio version was played by only three people: Ambrose (vocals/percussion/saxophone), Cook (vocals/Mellotron/synthesizer/percussion/keyboards), Stu (vocals/percussion/synthesizer). The track was recorded by Cook and co-produced by him and Stu.
The first hint of the song was in an Instagram story which featured an image of the band (barring Cook and Joey) sitting on grass with the caption “Garden Goblins HAHAHA.” On February 3rd, 2022, the song was teased through emojis as part of a guessing game to figure out the album’s tracklist. The song was represented by an emoji of a house and a mask of a Tengu, a yokai found in Japanese folklore. The song was guessed correctly on the 4th. It would be released as part of Omnium Gatherum on April 22nd, 2022 and would be Cook’s newest Gizzard song since “Down the Sink” on 2017’s Gumboot Soup.

“The Garden Goblin” debuted at the Return of the Curse of Timeland Festival in Naarm (Melbourne) on 2023-03-05 alongside “Magenta Mountain” and “The Dripping Tap,” making it the third song from Omnium Gatherum to be played live (“Gaia” was first on 2021-10-30). The live performance doesn’t deviate far from the studio version, outside of a real drum kit being used and a lack of sound effects and outro. It was played throughout 2022 into 2023, and while it hasn’t been played as much as “The Dripping Tap” or “Gaia,” it’s certainly not the least-played from Omnium, making it very common for a Cook song.
