Phantom At the Opera: Sydney '25 Recap
KGLW on stage with orchestra

Everything changes when you become a parent, least of all you’ll probably stop going to live music for about 14 months. Not that seeing Gizzard in Australia was easy before that: my last show was a short festival set at Splendour in the Grass 2023, and my last full headline show was mid-July 2019 night 1 at Sydney's Roundhouse. So on the train into night 2 of the Phantom Island orchestral tour at the Sydney Opera House, I could hardly believe where I was and what I was about to see, let alone the following night at the Enmore Theatre that I had added on just a couple of weeks prior.

Obsession Is Good For You: EU Spring Tour '25 - the Sights and Sounds Of Athens
View at dusk on Lycabettus Hill
Photographer Photon Obscura shares his view of Athens '25 in this Spring Tour recap.
There were some absolutely amazing venue choices on this EU 25 Spring tour and my decisions on which pair to hit were largely based on the venues. With so many tempting choices, Athens quickly took hold as a non-negotiable for me. Not only is it an amazing city that is shrouded in history, it offered one of the most unique venues that I had laid eyes on. As an photographer, the pull of that venue could not really be denied. The chance to shoot KGLW in a venue on top of a hill in Athens with views of the Acropolis, Aegean Sea, Athen’s distant lights and mountain ranges was an unparalleled opportunity. Tossing in the chance of a Magma closed the deal on this one.

GIZZ IN ASHEVILLE BY PHILM
On August 30th 2024, I got Gizzed.

Hard.

These are my thoughts.

Asheville is a heady ass town, so it felt appropriate that my first ever King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard show would be there.

I've been an immense fan of Geese — who were supporting KGLW — for about a year now ever since I saw them in a small club in Durham, NC. They are in fact my new favorite band. This probably put me in the rare category of a person at a Gizz show who knows more material by the opening band, which is cool with me as I really enjoy going into shows blind (movies, too).

North American Tour: Chicago Recap
poster art by Jason Galea: a dragon emerges via a glowing orb of circuitry over a purple cityscape

A lot has changed for me as a fan since Chicago ‘23. After I wrote my recap of last year’s residency I was offered to join KGLW.net as a volunteer. I did and it opened up a can of worms after I became the lead writer for the site’s song histories, where I documented every song King Gizzard ever wrote or performed. From there I only got deeper into this with show recaps, tour guide help and forum threads. I was already following the band closely but now I’m even more obsessed, so waiting for the next Chicago show was certainly exciting. It was made even more exciting when it was announced that it would be a marathon show (three hour set) with no repeats from the Salt Shed. Not only that, the opening band would be Geese, who had just released an incredible record called 3D Country. Not to mention that Gizzard released Flight b741 and started live streams for the entire tour with bootlegs to come soon after.

Needless to say, I had some hopeful expectations. I wanted the first half of Nonagon Infinity. I wanted “Crumbling Castle” into “The Fourth Colour.” I wanted “Hell” and “Dragon” and “Flamethrower.” I wanted deeper cuts like “You Can Be Your Silhouette.” Time permitting, I would want a “Head On/Pill.” More than anything, I wanted to hear a full performance of my favorite Gizzard suite: “Han-Tyumi and the Murder of the Universe.” I was so desperate for this that my flair on r/KGATLW read “Praying for MOTU suite during Chicago ‘24” ever since the band announced the show.

Somehow, King Gizzard did all of that and then some.

North American Tour: Red Rocks Recap
poster art by Jason Galea: a rat and a lizard fighting with swords at the gate of a volcanic castle

Recap by KGLW.net's own Chase Beck!

Anyone who has attended a King Gizzard show at Red Rocks – let alone all six previous shows going into this run – knows to some degree how much they seemingly love and cherish their ability to play at this historic venue. Maybe it's the influx of fans traveling, maybe it's an unspoken competition with the pantheon of legendary concerts in the amphitheater’s past – regardless, Red Rocks shows from Gizz are quickly gaining a reputation for all-time performances of staples, notable deep cuts and bust-outs, and multi-concert runs that test the stamina and endurance of the band and fans alike. In 2024, King Gizzard staged a run that looked similar to last year’s summer residency on the rocks. The model of two night shows with a special day set before the second was received exceedingly well so this didn’t serve as too much of a surprise; what was left dubious was how the band would approach the setlists. After boasting that their “no repeat” rule from previous cities was still in effect for the band’s Chicago marathon show, they upped the ante again by attempting to not repeat a single song from last year’s Red Rocks shows. While both “Gila Monster” and “Motor Spirit” were technically on both 2023 and 2024 Red Rocks setlists, “Gila” saw Jay Weinberg sit in this year while “Motor Spirit” was only a partial performance last year. So with about 15 minutes at most excepted, every song was fresh, with many Red Rocks firsts among some cuts they played there in 2022.

North American Tour: Minnesota Recap
poster art by Job van Rijen. A merry-go-round ridden by gators emerges from the head of a three-faced green demon.

So many people are coming out for King Gizzard, and lots of them are attending their first show. For our Minnesota recap, we've got avid concert-goer Andrew Madden giving a first impression after just getting into the band only a week prior. Will he be back? You know it.

Wow! What a night, show and performance! As a Gizzard newbie (only started listening in the last week) but avid concert goer (26th concert of 2024) wasn't sure what the vibe would be like. Also the Armory is a large barn (not the best acoustics). As far as I had heard, loved their wide variety and influences. As far as genres go their newest album speaks to my usual tastes and not much of a heavy metal guy.

To begin with, these guys blended various genres throughout the night with such seeming ease. Not something I was sure was possible but wow! The crowd also was a highlight. Such a friendly and easy crowd to gel with. Friendliest mosh pit mix from a non mosh pit guy (10 ft from the pit).

North American Tour: Newport Recap

Join Tony Theil of Attic Records as he recaps the August 25th show in Newport, Kentucky.

If you're inclined to connect King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard to the Grateful Dead, you may already be familiar with the Deadhead advisory mantra, "never miss a Sunday show." This has never been more true when considering the concert delivered by the boys in Newport, KY this past Sunday. After total looseness (nearly to a fault) and acoustic microtonal magic in Detroit and an air-tight electric flight through lands both colorful & dark in Cleveland where the audience was treated to heaps of heavy metal riffing proceeding a cluster of up-tempo, feel good songs most of which came out within the past few years, expectations were elusive going into the Megacorp Pavilion.9 p.m. hits with soulful psychedelic music playing through the house system and a crowd anxious for what feels like THEIR band, their friends in some ways.

North American Tour: Philadelphia Recap
poster art by Jason Galea: a snakelike architectural monstrosity plays guitar

So much has happened since the last time I saw King Gizzard in Philadelphia. That show on 10/22/22 marked a swerve in my life’s path that I never could have expected. Just a couple of weeks before stepping into Franklin Music Hall for my first Gizz show, I’d registered the domain where you’re reading this blog post. It had only been four or five months prior to that when my obsession had begun. I’d listened to their music here and there from around the time Trey Anastasio started talking about his new favorite band, but the music hadn’t stuck me right away. When it did stick, the hook went in deeply.

North American Tour Recap: Detroit and Cleveland
poster art by Jason Galea: dragon skeleton perched among trippy ruins

King Gizzard. Detroit. Acoustic. Boats. Vinny. Microtonal. "Make 'em all blue, T!" Shots. A nursing mother. Amby on top of a truck. Security chasing Joey through the venue. More shots. The morning after, it all feels like a fragmented dream from the mind of an obsessed Gizzard fan. It went by in a flash, but it was real. Really, really real.

"King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard came out heavy and loud to start the sixth show of their North American tour at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage, a covered outdoor amphitheater that seats more than 16,000 people."

Join Javier Serna of Jam in the Stream for this recap of his experience up close in Toronto! Thanks for writing up another recap for us, Javier! I love the coincidence that led to this coming together. The KGLW.net team was in our weekly meeting right before the show when we spotted Javier in the crowd on the stream.
