“Sense” opens up Paper Mâché Dream Balloon on an environmentally conscious note with Stu singing about the hypocrisy of modern society in the face of climate change. He notes how many will say that the threat is on their mind but refuse to take action; opting to buy cars and arguing about their tax money in the face of an existential threat. As the opening line says “it’s in vogue to be feckless when it comes to the mother taking care of us.” Society has deemed its apathy and dishonesty fashionable, and this terrifies Stu, who states that these conflicting ideals make “no sense at all.” The song itself is a jazzy acoustic number with a lead clarinet part. It’s a fan favorite from the album and an essential environmental song from the band, even getting a reference on the K.G. track “The Hungry Wolf of Fate.” “Sense” was released on November 13th, 2015, with an instrumental being released as part of the deluxe version of Paper Mâché Dream Balloon on October 29th, 2021.

The earliest known performance of “Sense” was on 2019-08-31 at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC. The song was played six times throughout the year on electric guitars and keyboards, as opposed to the acoustic instruments and clarinet found on the original. These versions are also longer than the original and feature a jammed outro. A performance of the song from 2019-10-11 was shown briefly in the film Chunky Shrapnel. “Sense” was then played twice in 2020 before the COVID-19 lockdowns. It returned for the band’s acoustic shows starting on 2021-12-13, while this version gets back to its roots, it's in a different key than both the studio version and the 2019/2020 performances. It made a one off appearance on 2022-05-31 as a show opener, once again returning to electric guitars but with the changed chords of the 2021 acoustic versions. This version was also longer than any previously heard renditions, at over ten minutes in length. The song was played four times in 2023 with performances being heavier than before, while keeping lengths close to the 2022-05-31 rendition in Greece.
