An Interview With Michelle Cable — Founder Of Panache and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Manager

Michelle Cable is the manager and booking agent for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and founder of Panache. She has been described by Stu as his ‘guardian angel’, without whom the band may not even exist. We decided to reach out to learn more about her relationship with the band, and her place in where they are today — Michelle graciously took time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions.

Brighton Show Recap: May 31, 2024

In a rush and can’t read the whole thing? I’ll cut right right to the chase: this entire show is worth checking out. This makes the short list of best shows of the tour and included three live debuts.

For their first appearance in Brighton since 2017, the boys hosted a chilled-out acoustic evening at the Brighton Dome in England. The crowd on stream had a palpable but chill buzz, reminding me of the acoustic show I had attended live back in 2023 at the Caverns. That night had been full of special moments, incredible musicianship, and a certain level of comfort from the band that you only get at an acoustic show. And King Gizzard’s European acoustic debut was to be no exception.

We were off to a quick and flashy start with an acoustic “Iron Lung” debut. Amby came in calmer than ever with his “Frog breath, steam tent”’s and the acoustic jams were excellent. After the song, Joey mentioned that they thought the tune “might not work live” and that it was headed in that direction as they were playing. But to everyone in the audience (and the writers here), it sounded just beautiful.

Bristol Show Recap: May 30, 2024

With their European tour chugging ahead at full steam, King Gizzard rolled into the Bristol Beacon to deliver a stellar show. After some unexpected song choices in the previous show's setlist and an acoustic show on the horizon, song choice speculation became a questionable endeavor. It's always fun to guess, but in the end the band follows where the river of inspiration runs, and they play what they want to, when they want to.

Prior to any streams going live, a photo circulated of the synth table being readied by the crew. Soon we were watching members of the band tinkering with the array of devices. As the first mellow synth notes grew in volume, Jason flashed the fishie-face on the screen and it was on.

Wolverhampton Show Recap: May 29, 2024

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard made their debut appearance in Wolverhampton, UK on May 29, 2024. The boys dug deep into their discography to deliver an outstanding performance, sending a shockwave throughout the Midlands in the process. The majority of the set was loose and jammy, juxtaposed by a four-track metal closer.

After multiple nights of battling illness, Grace Cummings was able to return to the spotlight and prepare the crowd for King Gizzard. Grace and her band played plenty of material from her latest album Ramona. Her hauntingly beautiful vocals, alongside her band’s classic rock demeanour, shook the walls of the Civic Hall. Grace’s set was a blissful way to kick off the evening; it was great to see her back in good health.

King Gizzard took to the stage around 20:50. As the crowd erupted with excitement, Stu and Joey reached for their C# guitars.

Edinburgh Show Recap: May 27, 2024

King Gizzard just rolled into Scotland with a gig at The Usher Hall in Edinburgh on 2024-05-27. This show doesn’t feature any debuts like a lot of the previous shows, but it does feature a number of good jams and a wild amount of teases throughout its runtime. It also features Stu in a kilt, connecting to his “Mackenzie heritage” (as said by Joey).

The band kicked off with a rendition of “Magma” that goes for about ten minutes. It’s a fairly typical performance of the song, but a good start and it gets the audience excited for more. Keeping up that energy is “The Reticent Raconteur” > “The Lord of Lighting”, and while it doesn’t deviate from past versions, Stu is animated throughout, especially in the song’s climatic breakdown (made all the more hectic by Galea’s Nonagon-centric visuals).

Liverpool Show Recap: May 26, 2024

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard brought sonic attack to Liverpool nearly nine years on from their previous visit. The setlist contained fan favourite tracks from the beloved album Nonagon Infinity and several microtonal numbers from Flying Microtonal Banana, K.G., and L.W. Additionally, the boys debuted the track “Raw Feel.”

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard made their long-awaited return to Liverpool on May 26, 2024, nearly nine years on from their previous appearance. With very little setlist information available from their two previous visits — in 2014 at the Arts Club and 2015 at The Kazimier — the band could select almost any track from their discography without breaching their golden rule of “no repeats from the last time we were here.” Despite the broad selection of songs available, the band decided to debut yet another song from their forthcoming album.

London Show Recap: May 25, 2024

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard hit the Wide Awake festival in London full-force. With the beloved and inimitable Cheryl Waters on hand to stoke the crowd, the band wasted no time setting the vibe for the next ninety minutes. Joey commanded Sammy-boy to turn it up, Stu counted off "Planet B," and the audience erupted. Second in line after a well-thrashed "Planet B" was another truly 'offal' version of "Organ Farmer," a song that appears to have stepped up in the rotation. (It was performed just five times in 2023—with forty-plus shows to go in 2024, the future promises ample portions of muscle meat and brie.) From the vantage point of the couch, it seemed like every word of "Organ Farmer" rang out clearly and the band put their full strength behind each note—an exemplary version.

Amsterdam Show Recap: May 23, 2024

Following a hit-filled marathon show on 2024-05-22, the band could have gone in a number of directions. They could continue to play hits from their catalog, they could go for some deep cuts with some new experimentation, or they could strike a good blend of the two.

King Gizzard seemed to take the third option with their show on 2024-05-23 at AFAS Live in Amsterdam. While the set is filled with many familiar favorites, there are a number of odd and fascinating differences between this show and your standard two-hour Gizz performance. While some songs were played as they’ve always been, others have been completely flipped on their head. It’s a one-of-a-kind show that will certainly hold some staying power.

Hamburg Show Recap: May 22, 2024

At Stadtpark Open Air in Hamburg, Germany on 2024-05-22, King Gizzard played their first marathon show of 2024. For the uninitiated, marathon shows are three-hour-long Gizzard shows (opposed to the usual two hours) and are sometimes accompanied by the band’s record fairs which sell exclusive vinyl and other musical goodies. Hamburg got both.

Hamburg got both. They kicked off the day with a record fair which saw the release of an exclusive 7” of “Swan Song” and “Extinction.” Later the band brought fans through a three-hour-long show featuring a number of heavy hitters from the their discography. The genres and time frames ranged wildly but the set itself was a crowd pleaser with a number of interesting choices sprinkled in for good measure. It’s a show that could certainly distract you from the rain...

Berlin Show Recap: May 20, 2024

Looking back it seems obvious: Of course King Gizzard would choose their show in Berlin, an international hub for modern electronic dance music, to debut an expanded bank of synthesizers and processors and, naturally, material from The Silver Cord.

Beginning at the end, the band opened the show with "Extinction," with Stu, Joey, Lucas, and Cook gathered like mad scientists around a cornucopia of keyboards arranged on a rolling table. Amby, looking a bit lonely if I'm being honest, played keys from his new position at the front of stage left.

Starting with some ambient knob-fiddling, the band built up the melodic core of "Extinction" for two full minutes before Cavs stepped onto the drum riser…
