The shortest of all the songs on Omnium Gatherum, “The Funeral” is a flamenco jam with only two words sung throughout, creating a mysterious ending to the album that follows “Candles”’ warning of environmental destruction. The song proceeds with the ticking of a metronome at 60 bpm, which not only connects the song to the albums Made in Timeland and Laminated Denim, but demonstrates that every second that passes is time slipping away from us, leading humanity to our collective funeral.
The song was played by Ambrose (percussion), Cavs (drums), Cook (synthesizer) and Stu (vocals/percussion/guitar/Wurlitzer/bass/keyboards/organ). It was recorded, mixed and produced by Stu.
In February of 2022 the band teased the tracklisting of the new album through emojis on Twitter which led to fans guessing the song’s names. The title was guessed by @AninamHD. “The Funeral” hint was convoluted, with a slew of emojis with no relation to each other. However when one took the first letter of each image, it spelled out the song’s title. The song would first appear on Omnium Gatherum when it was released on April 22nd, 2022.
“The Funeral” has not been played live.
