“The Floating Fire” describes a battle between the Lord of Lightning and the Balrog. While both are powerful beings capable of making the earth shake, it’s clear that the Balrog will lose the fight. The Lord, brandishing a golden stake, flies into space and throws it down at the Balrog, defeating it instantly. Starting with a menacing section with prominent throat singing and ending with a reprise of “The Lord of Lightning”, it marks the end of the violence in the tale.

Originally the song did not appear on their planned tracklisting written on their studio whiteboard. It first appeared in Jason Galea and Ben Jones’ music video for “The Lord of Lightning vs Balrog.” It continues the shots seen in “The Balrog” with the band playing under projections of fire and lava, though it also cuts to Stu singing the song on an old TV with lava running under it. His face is red and black with small, inhuman pupils. After this, Leah Senior is seen on the TV surrounded by the candles previously shown in “Some Context” before wrapping back to the band playing beneath new projections of lightning. The song was officially released on June 23rd, 2017 on Murder of the Universe.

“The Floating Fire” has never been played live.
