Song history written by TimelandIsWacky

From its start, “Silent Spirit” is cinematic. The orchestration evokes early ‘70s soul and R&B in the vein of Bobby Womack’s “Across 110th Street,” though it also mixes in hints of flamenco influence. One may also see similarities to the Grateful Dead’s “Eyes of the World” with its shared G#m chord, similar tempo, and relaxed vibe. While Gizzard creates a calm (albeit somewhat ominous) atmosphere musically, the lyrics are much more complicated and haunting. The song, like many tracks on Phantom Island, comments on the band’s personal feelings towards touring, alongside some broader views towards the cycle of life. Stu’s verses are heartfelt with him addressing his loved ones (with an entire verse for his children) while describing life as a constant eddy that one must navigate. Joey’s verses are more existential, exploring generations of families and the ways that the passing of time obscures the past. Ambrose strikes a balance between Stu’s emotional honesty and Joey’s philosophical angle. His first verse is sung from the role of a paternal figure – warning his son not to become a musician and to instead find a stable occupation. He then questions his potential to feel pride in his son’s accomplishments, as they would be achieved largely in his absence due to the touring lifestyle. His second and final verse is much larger in scope, singing as an embodiment of natural elements like wind and rain, as well as emotional and psychological concepts like love and trauma. There’s a few connections to other songs throughout “Silent Spirit.” Stu references “Eternal Return” in his second verse, while Ambrose’s final verse has lyrics lifted from “Gaia” and is rooted in panpsychism.

“Silent Spirit” was written and performed by Ambrose (vocals/piano), Cavs (drums/percussion), Cook (organ), Joey (guitar/vocals), Lucas (bass), and Stu (guitar/vocals). Footage of the band listening to the track (without the orchestra) can be seen in The Making of Phantom Island. The documentary also reveals the song’s working title “I am Wind I am Rain” – once again connecting back to “Gaia.”
The band first referenced “Silent Spirit” during their 2025 Reddit AMA, hosted via an account named u/deepdominion. Their old account u/metalliccocoon also gained the nickname Deepdominion, though the AMA was not hosted on it. The song’s title was also used as a presale code for the band’s 2025 Australian tour. While Ambrose had previously called “Spacesick” his favorite song from the album, he said “Silent spirit is my faves atm I think” before the “Grow Wings and Fly” music video premiered.
The song was released on Phantom Island on June 13th, 2025.

“Silent Spirit” has not been played live but it was referenced after a performance of “Ataraxia” on 2024-09-06.
