When I first saw you
Lying there in wait
With your unearthed, buried smile
I sing to my duckling
Yes, you must learn to use your wings
But it is I that will be taught by you to fly
Phantom Island is the mature introspective crash landing back down to Earth after the reckless heights of sister album Flight b741.
Both conceived in the same sessions, Phantom Island gained its own trajectory when orchestral conductor, arranger and pianist Chad Kelly reached out to the band to collaborate. Accepting his offer on the basis that they had no idea how it would turn out, they gave him the basic tracks to complete with a layer of orchestral arrangements — successfully bringing the project into brand-new sonic territory that gives a timeless feeling to the exceptionally frank, honest songwriting dominated by uncertainty, longing, and love.
What to listen to next:
• If you want to hear the companion album that led into Phantom Island
• If you want to hear another clean, dense sounding album dealing with themes of parenthood
• If you want to hear another collaborative album with a timeless soundscape
