An Ambrose-led track with bright keys, percussion, sitar, flutes and Santana-esque guitar parts, “Presumptuous” describes someone who puts down others while believing they’re the center of the world. They are given trust only to throw it all away. The presumptuous person this song is about is left up to interpretation. The subject could just as easily be world leaders and politicians (such as in other Ambrose songs like “Supreme Ascendency” and “Smoke & Mirrors”), someone known personally to Ambrose, or a totally made up scenario that we can all relate to.

“Presumptuous” started as an idea from Ambrose which was sent to Stu, according to a SPIN interview. “He sent me a demo of that when we were in lockdown, and I was like, this is sick. This is the recording. He said, what? This is the demo. I was like, no! This is the recording. That ended up being the intro part, and we added the jam later.” In a Reddit AMA from May of 2022 Ambrose said the song was inspired by (not about) Rob Thomas, Len and Santana as well as “Mambo No. 5.” In the video The Making of Omnium Gatherum Ambrose is seen recording his vocals for the song with Stu interrupting him. The final track was played by Ambrose (vocals/Wurlitzer/percussion), Cavs (drums), Cook (Mellotron/keyboards), Joey (flute) and Stu (guitar/percussion/Wurlitzer/Mellotron/bass) with a unique credit of “party” given to one Madeline Wright (drummer of The Bush, a band that also featured Joey’s sister Bella as well as Edith Kenny-Smith, Ambrose’s sister and Joey’s girlfriend). Her sole involvement on the track is the partying sounds heard throughout that start around 1:44. The song was recorded, mixed and produced by Stu.
To tease Omnium Gatherum the band tweeted out sequences of emojis for the fans to decipher. Each tweet would be a new name for a song. “Presumptuous” was one of the hardest of the bunch and required the fans to think of the first letter of what was shown. This spelled out the title. It was solved by @IndependentAni1.
“Presumptuous” was released as part of Omnium Gatherum on April 22nd, 2022 and would later become the B-side of “Gaia” when it was released as a limited edition “Lucky Rainbow” 7” single. Only one thousand copies were pressed and sold on tour (leftover copies ended up on the Gizzverse store). The single was then reissued later that year on “Orange Lava” vinyl in very limited quantities (fifty to one hundred) and sold at the 2022 Forest Hills and St. Kilda record fairs.

The song made its live debut on 2022-05-20 at the Agora in Cleveland, and would see appearances at a handful of other shows in 2022. While mostly a standalone track, the song began to be added to jams in 2023, being paired with “Ice V” and “Hypertension” while also growing in length. “Presumptuous” appeared a handful of times in 2023 with an acoustic debut on 2023-06-04 but would disappear in 2024.
