The title track for Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is a breezy acoustic song with tempo changes, eerie fiddle and prominent flute that, according to Stu, is about “taking troubles and turning them into something else.” In the lyrics Stu sings about daydreaming to escape his troubles, though he learns that he can deal with his issues by sticking them to a “chimera balloon” and abandoning those thoughts. By creating this multifaceted balloon, he is able to free himself from worrying by letting it float away. It was first heard through a visualizer-like music video by Jason Galea which shows the album cover model in front of moving clouds with a simple yellow border. The speed of the clouds moves faster during the choruses. It was later included in an ATO Soundcloud sampler on August 24th 2015 and released on Paper Mâché Dream Balloon on November 13th alongside a two song flexi-disc sampler. An instrumental version with a unique outro was released as part of the deluxe edition of Paper Mâché Dream Balloon on October 29th, 2021.
The only reported live performance of “Paper Mâché Dream Balloon” was on 2016-02-27 at Bi Nuu in Berlin. No recording of this performance exists.
