Songs > Melting > History

Throughout King Gizzard’s discography, the threat of climate change is made apparent. Whether it's in the mellow acoustics of Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, or the raging metal of PetroDragonic Apocalypse, the band stresses that humanity’s greed and apathy is dooming the planet. Typically this message is paired with another concept or story, but with “Melting” the band is as blatant as possible. In its lyrics, Stu says that global warming is a threat larger than terrorism or viruses and that our words mean nothing if we can’t back them up with action. Conversation is meaningless when the world we live in won’t be around for our children. In a sense, “Melting” is the band’s environmental manifesto, describing bluntly how they feel about the dangers that face mankind. The message is backed up by a percussion-heavy instrumental with some of the wildest riffs on the entire album. Part bossa nova, part Anatolian rock, but always distinctly Gizz.

“Melting” was performed by a small team of Cavs (drums), Lucas (bass) and Stu (guitar/bass/synthesizer/vocals/percussion). The song was released as the second track on Flying Microtonal Banana on February 24th, 2017. For a time, the track “Scared Of Christmas” was thought to be a demo for the song, though this was disproved with the release of Demos Vol. 2: Music To Eat Bananas To.

“Melting” is the rarest of the Flying Microtonal Banana songs. The first known performance of the song was on 2019-06-26 at Howler in Naarm (Melbourne). It was played one other time in 2019 on 2019-07-06 at the UNSW Roundhouse in Eora (Sydney). One of these performances appears in the documentary RATTY. It wouldn’t be played again until the band’s microtonal shows in 2021 starting with 2021-04-21, moving to a performance on 2021-04-22 and ending with 2021-12-20. The song is typically longer live than it is on Flying Microtonal Banana.
