“Hell’s Itch” is the fifth song on Ice, Death… and is a fast paced jam utilizing the Mixolydian scale that focuses on the titular hell's itch, an uncontrollable reaction to sunburn. While the song focuses on this uncomfortable burn, it features in-jokes and references to the band’s other material. The line “flick the switch” initially appeared five years prior within the alternate lyrics of “Han-Tyumi, the Confused Cyborg”. Musically the song ties into “Witchcraft,” “Dragon” and “Flamethrower” as well as The Silver Cord song “Chang’e” by using a similar riff around the three minute mark. A specific line in the song has caused some confusion; a quick mention of the name Helen in the lyrics “look at me now, Helen. Yes, I’m finally red.” While many fans took this to be a reference to Helen of Troy or even singer Helen Forrest who sang a song called “Oh! Look At Me Now,” the answer is much less epic. Helen is a nickname Ambrose was given, while Joey has the nickname Red. The phrase is just an in-joke that made it to the final version of the track.
“Hell’s Itch” is the longest track on the album and a fan favorite for its unique, airy instrumental and uneasy lyrics that capture the condition perfectly.
