Songs > God Is Calling Me Back Home > History

“God Is Calling Me Back Home” is a dynamic song which starts with quiet acoustics and compressed vocals, before exploding into a distorted and high flying second section. The lyrics are morbid with lines about having to murder certain people seemingly out of boredom, contrasted with biblical language; its protagonist hears God’s call and drops their hate and ill intent. The band would revisit a similar concept much later on with “The Book.”

While most recording dates are not known, the band did vocal overdubs on May 23rd, 2013 based on an outtake uploaded to their Facebook page. The song was released as part of Float Along — Fill Your Lungs on September 27th, 2013.

The earliest reported performance was on 2013-04-19 at the Astor Theatre in Perth. The song would be played throughout 2013 and made appearances during full performances of Float Along — Fill Your Lungs. A rendition of the song on 2013-06-23 taped by Carbie Warbie was used in the music video for “I’m Not A Man Unless I Have A Woman.” Past 2014, “God Is Calling Me Back Home” became rare with only a few documented performances. Footage of the song being played by Stu, Joey and Cavs for Stu’s birthday on 2014-10-26 was included in the documentary BOOTLEG HOLIDAY FROM HELL. It made one appearance during the band’s secret set on 2015-06-12 and then disappeared for nearly a decade.
