Created out of reversed and slowed down clips of “Hell,” “Evil Star” is an ominous soundscape that was first heard in a promotional video for Infest the Rats’ Nest released on June 18th, 2019. In the following weeks it became the band’s walk-on music for their various 2019 tours, with the first confirmed appearance being on 2019-06-28 at the Forum Theatre in Naarm (Melbourne) as heard in the film Live at the Forum Melbourne.
The piece would appear on various live albums from the 2019 tour, starting with Live In Adelaide ‘19 and Live In Paris ‘19 on January 10th, 2020. These versions feature the audience cheering as the band walks on stage. It later appeared in the film Chunky Shrapnel with the unedited studio version of the track making its way to the soundtrack. “Evil Star” would also be used in a promo video for the movie.
If you’re wondering why it’s called “Evil Star,” you can reverse the title and get “Rats Live,” fitting for the shows the band played throughout 2019. The title may also refer to the sun, which plays a vital role in the story of Infest the Rats’ Nest on “Perihelion.”
