Songs > Blame It On the Weather > History

A simple song about looking at events around you and refusing to take accountability or responsibility, “Blame It On The Weather” is a bright song with a slightly darker lyrical edge. The song brings up ways one might try to avoid confronting the issue, from deflection to drug abuse (specifically bringing up k-holes, an out of body dissociative experience felt after a large dose of ketamine). “Blame It On The Weather” features lead vocals from both Ambrose and Stu who trade verses while also singing harmony, as well as a slide guitar solo from Joey.

At 17:40 of The Making of Omnium Gatherum Joey is seen recording his slide guitar part with a battery, a move which Stu and Ambrose loved. Based on their clothing, we know that the song was being recorded the same day they apparently finished “Candles.” The liner notes of Omnium Gatherum state that Ambrose (vocals/percussion/synthesizer/saxophone), Cavs (drums/percussion), Joey (guitar) and Stu (vocals/organ/Mellotron/percussion) performed on the song. It was mixed and produced by Stu while being recorded by Stu, Ambrose and Cavs. The song’s title was teased in a Twitter post on February 4th, 2022. It featured emojis of an angry face, a hand pointing towards the right and a thermometer. It was guessed correctly by @Papamanca69 days later on the 11th. The song was released as part of Omnium Gatherum on April 22nd, 2022.

A Jason Galea-filmed music video of the band rehearsing for their 2022 American tour was released on July 11th, 2022. It shows the band playing the song at the County Line recording studio with some video effects, and contains a new version of the song recorded by Sam Joseph, Nico Wilson and Gaspard De Meulemeester, with mixing done by Stu.

“Blame It On the Weather” made its live debut on 2022-03-07 at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, returning on 2022-04-12 to be played regularly throughout the year before dropping off setlists in 2023, with only one appearance on 2023-03-06. The song is typically played close to the studio version, although without the slide solo.
