As the title suggests, “Slow Jam 1” is the first of the easy going psychedelic jams on I’m In Your Mind Fuzz. Sporting a mellow atmosphere, analog production and callback to “Am I In Heaven?,” the lyrics are a simple call to slow down and breathe. During a performance of the song on 2024-08-25, Stu said “do you ever have one of those days where you feel like your brain chemistry is fuckin’ out of whack? Yeah? Do you guys know how it feels like? This song’s for those people.”
The song was recorded by Paul Maybury at A Secret Location in Melbourne and co-mixed by Stu with a final release on October 31st, 2014.
On January 16th, 2015 the song was given a music video. Shot and edited by Jamie Wdziekonski with effects and post production by Jason Galea, it features black and white stills of the band which are animated and looped. A few months later a CD single would be released.
“Slow Jam 1” was first reported live on 2014-09-18 at the Ding Dong Lounge in Naarm (Melbourne) and would be played a handful of times throughout the end of 2014, with the final reported performance from the year being on 2014-12-19. Based on available recordings, these versions of “Slow Jam 1” didn’t vary much from the original but were longer with a jammed outro. The only notably different version would be a short acoustic medley of both Slow Jam songs from 3RRR. In the following years “Slow Jam 1” did not appear on any known setlists, though it did appear in the documentary BOOTLEG HOLIDAY FROM HELL.
The song would reappear after an over four hundred show gap on 2021-07-25 as part of the Splendour XR Online ‘Festival’ — which was played in virtual reality. Just like the 2014 versions, the song would go on longer with an extended ending. A clip of Stu mixing the audio for this performance of the song can be heard in their behind the scenes video The Making of Omnium Gatherum. Following its initial comeback, “Slow Jam 1” would be turned into an acoustic number for the band’s all-acoustic shows on 2021-12-13 and 2021-12-19.
The electric version of the song would see multiple performances throughout 2022, this time often running past the ten-minute mark with various teases. This trend of improvisation-led versions would continue in the following years.
In an interview with Relix from 2023, Stu mentioned that the Slow Jams returned to the sets because they were easy to play with little rehearsal needed.
