Songs > Sketches of Brunswick East II > History

The longest of the three parts, “Sketches of Brunswick East II” is a slow jam on the album’s main theme, introducing parts not heard in the first, and giving the song room to breathe. The track starts with the sound of the Optigan, a keyboard that plays sound off of a disc. The specific disc used is called “Big Band Beat.” A digital version was released in early 2017.

A demo for the main melody was first heard in an impromptu demo live stream hosted by the band, and was eventually released as part of Demos Vol. 1: Music To Kill Bad People To. The demo version consists of a jam on the main theme and was later split into three songs. The studio version of “Sketches of Brunswick East II” was played by Alex Brettin (electric piano/Optigan/synthesizer/electronic drum kit), Cavs (drum kit 1/drum kit 2/maracas/floor toms/bongos) and Stu (bass/flute/electric piano). It was released on August 18th, 2017.

While never being played by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, “Sketches of Brunswick East II” has been played by Mild High Club. The earliest confirmed performance was on December 21st, 2017 at the Observatory in Santa Ana, where the band pulled out a four minute rendition of the song. Mild High Club would open for King Gizzard in Spring of 2018 and with that, they continued to play the song. On 2018-03-03 at the L'Aéronef in Lille, Stu played the song alongside Mild High Club. Three days later at the Paradiso Grote, Mild High Club would perform the song again, this time without Stu. These are the only known performances of the song.
