1989 Japanese Vintage White Fender Stratocaster (2008-2014)

First seen during Revolver and Sun shows in 2008, this was Stu’s main guitar from early 2009 until 2014. Sometime in 2009, it was given a black and white paint job (presumably done by Stu) and appeared in this state at some Almacknjack shows. In early photos there appears to be clear stickers on the body of the guitar. On October 8th, 2013, plastic rhinestones were added to the guitar, something that would later be done with his Yamaha the following year. Beginning in early 2014, the guitar was tuned to C# Standard in order to perform and record songs from the I’m In Your Mind Fuzz album and was used live regularly until September 2014 when Stu replaced it with the Yamaha SG-5A. During a later interview Stu said he modified this guitar by adding quarter tone frets to the end of the fretboard.

Custom Painted Squier Stratocaster (2010-2013)

This guitar was a hand painted gift to Stu from Cookie, given to him in October 2010. It is first seen at Generator Party #3 on November 21st, 2010 and was used on sessions for 12 Bar Bruise. The guitar was later stolen on May 1st, 2013 along with Stu’s laptop.

White Fender Stratocaster XII (2011-2012)

Purchased in late November/early December 2011, this guitar was Stu’s first 12 string guitar. It was first seen at the Meredith Music Festival on December 11th, 2011 and was used for the remaining shows that the band performed that year. During a performance at the Esplanade Hotel on December 31st, 2011 Stu mentions this guitar, saying "I’ve had this new guitar for a little bit now. I really love it, but it's really hard to tune!". After this it has no other known live appearances and was last seen on September 19th, 2012 during the filming of the Muckraker music video before being sold sometime in late 2012.

1966 Reagal/Harmony Parlor Guitar (2013-2013)

Purchased on March 19th, 2013, this guitar was frequently used during King Gizzard live performances by both Stu and Ambrose throughout 2013 as well as during sessions for Float Along - Fill Your Lungs and Oddments. The first time the guitar was seen (outside of a Facebook post made the day Stu bought the guitar) was during rehearsals for the band’s April 2013 tour. After this it was used by Stu for performances of Mystery Jack and God Is Calling Me Back Home (although by November 2013 he started using an electric guitar for Mystery Jack).

1967 Candy Blue Yamaha “Flying Samurai” SG-5A (2014-2018, 2022-2024)

First seen at St Kilda Festival on February 9th, 2014, this guitar is probably Stu’s most played live instrument having made appearances over 10 years of the band’s career. In the band’s Rig Rundown interview, Stu mentions that he purchased it in 2013. Initially this guitar was tuned in E Standard tuning and replaced his Fender Stratocaster which he had started tuning to C# Standard to accommodate the songs from I’m In Your Mind Fuzz. At this time he mainly used this guitar for Head On/Pill, Sleepwalker and some of the older songs that the band would occasionally play. He kept it in this tuning for the majority of the year until he purchased his Hagstrom F-12S in late August/early September 2014. For the first few performances in September, Cookie used this guitar while Stu started using the Hagstrom, but after a few shows Stu began using this guitar for any songs in C# Standard. He continued to use the guitar in this tuning until he purchased his Gibson Holy Explorer in early November 2018. The Yamaha wasn’t seen again until a performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on October 30th, 2021 where it was back in E Standard tuning. Stu has continued to use this guitar at almost every performance since.
