A Trip To Timeland - Three Weeks Following King Gizzard on Tour in Europe
selfie photo of Seamus, Javier, and two European fans

It’s been more than a month since I returned from a three-week trip of a lifetime to Europe, one that afforded me the opportunity to see six King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard shows on the front end of their insanely paced seventeen-show tour.

KGLW.net Meta-Post #02: Changing Pace - Next Phase

This update is actually coming a lot sooner than we originally thought — though we have also had a lot going on since the last post. Not least, King Gizzard have completed a tour! This has been their first since the launch of KGLW.net. Aside from a few loose shows over the new year, this was the first true test for the ongoing setlist notation process. Requiring us to keep up with the shows while they are happening, with inconsistent internet access, time zone conversions, unreleased material, and wild speculation, it has been an interesting challenge to keep it all together to provide our signature detail and accuracy as soon as we are able. The ‘23 Europe tour has also attracted several new members to the team who have been crucial for the increased workload, so welcome and thank you!

Review Of "Polygondwanaland" Graphic Novel (by Joe Courtney and Jorge Peña)

With their graphic novel adaptation of Polygondwanaland, Joe Courtney and Jorge Peña have crafted a wonderful addition to the ever-expanding Gizzverse. It’s a perfect example of how the bootlegger legacy can and should evolve into uncharted territory.

When you’ve listened to the 2017 album as many times as I have, it was hard not to hear the text sung in my mind (fuzz) as I read the comic. Courtney transposes lyrics word for word in some contexts, but playfully rearranges them in others, keeping the reader on their toes. But if you played the album while reading, it wouldn’t match up exactly. The longest song Crumbling Castle gets covered within a few pages, with the rest of the chapters delivered in a non-linear fashion. It’s a welcome alteration. The graphic novel ends up being a mix of familiar and fresh material, populated by plenty of curveballs thrown by the artistic team.

Gizzverse Compendium #001: Anamnesis Crashes Through

The word 'anamnesis' emerges into the Gizzverse first as the title of an instrumental track of synth music on the album Chunky Shrapnel, released in 2020:

A year later, it appears in the lyrics of the song Blue Morpho:

Falling upwards through clouds of glue
Anamnesis crashing through
Blurry photos all I've gained
From my last domain

A year after that, it appears again within nearly identical lyrics of the song Magenta Mountain:

We fell through a dream across clouds of glue
Anamnesis crashing through

All three of these songs were written by Stu Mackenzie. So what does the word mean and why does he use it so much?

A Conversation With King Gizzard's University Professor
photo of Dr Barry Hill

Dr. Barry Hill is the Senior Lecturer at Southern Cross University Faculty of Business Law and the Arts at the Lismore campus on Bundjalung country in New South Wales, and currently teaches in the Bachelor of Contemporary Music program.

Between 2009–2011, Dr. Hill lectured in the Bachelor of Music Industry course at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he taught Stu Mackenzie, Eric Moore, Joe Walker, and Lucas Skinner (now Harwood) who were in the process of forming King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

On October 29th 2010, he recorded one of their music performance assessments, and in December 2022 uploaded the video of the performance to YouTube.

It is one of their first ever performances and the earliest publicly available recording of the band.

Throughout our conversation, we cover the stand-out approach of the band, the unique aspects of the Australian music industry, what they did right to make success, innovation driven by the arts sector, and generally break down King Gizzard in terms of their cultural and environmental contexts.

Community Content Spotlight: 1063 Days: a King Gizzard Mini Documentary

The Red Rocks marathon shows were the pinnacle of the King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard live performance. The band have always been regarded for their high energy live shows, which for years had been building from a more standard promotion of the newest material, into an acknowledgement of their large and diverse discography. It was finally time to put it all together, to look back at every album and construct a massive multiple-hour set in celebration — where better to do it than the iconic Colorado jam venue? Originally announced in 2019 and booked for March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic would see the performances delayed for over two years.

The gap was enough for seven new albums, which had the band re-emerge with yet another significant stylistic shift into a new golden era, including a whole new demographic of fans; who, as the marathon sets finally approached for real were suddenly faced with the consideration of just how meaningful the wait had been.

Gizzverse Compendium Volume #00: Introduction

“That’s a word that I — don’t, know where it even came from”, was Stu’s carefully worded response when asked about the ‘Gizzverse’ in early 2017.

In the now-lost interview by Veronica & Lewis on national Australian alternative radio station Triple J, he was clearly conscious of not speaking too much power into the concept that had just started to grow beyond his control.
